After a long battle with non-Hodgkins lymphoma, retired Chief Steve Ebner passed away at home in Hesperus on Tuesday, September 3, 2013. Further details can be found in the Durango Herald.
Steve was buried with full firefighter’s honors at Greenmount Cemetery on Monday, September 9, 2013. In addition to members of the Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Department, many members of neighboring fire departments and other governmental agencies joined with Steve’s family, friends, and neighbors to pay their final respects. As the presiding officer, Deputy Fire Chief Tom Aurnhammer of Los Pinos Fire District honored Steve during the funeral ceremony. Long-time friend and fellow-firefighter Hal Daughty eulogized Steve with a medley of both professional and personal remembrances. Clyde Johnson served as chaplain for the funeral. Thanks to the Durango Fire and Rescue Agency for opening Station 1 for a reception following the funeral.
