At the recommendation of the local Fire Chiefs and Sheriff Duke Schirard, the Board of County Commissioners enacted Stage I fire restrictions on June 19, 2013, for all private lands in the unincorporated areas of La Plata County excluding those lands in the town of Bayfield, Ignacio, Durango or any Federal or Tribal lands) and on all land owned by La Plata County through the adoption of Resolution No. 2013-21. As conditions worsened, the Sheriff and the Fire Chiefs requested that Stage II fire restrictions be enacted on July 9, 2013, through the adoption of resolution 2013-23.  Imposing fire restrictions is a serious and important measure that has helped to reduce the threat of dangerous and damaging fires and helped to protect the citizens of La Plata County.

Recently, La Plata County has been receiving rainfall, but not enough so that the Sheriff and the Chiefs feel that all the threat of fire danger has eased. Therefore, La Plata County Sheriff and local Fire Chiefs recommended to the La Plata County Board of County Commissioners  that the fire restrictions be eased back to Stage I fire restrictions for all private lands in the unincorporated areas of La Plata County excluding those lands in the town of Bayfield, Ignacio, Durango or any Federal or Tribal lands.  At their special business meeting, the La Plata County Board of County Commissioners approved implementing Stage I fire restrictions, effective July 17, 2013.
