Important Information

Permits are issued Monday thru Thursday 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Please allow 3 business days for the permit to be reviewed.

Once issued, permits are valid for:

  • Open Burning - 10 days
  • Burn Pits - 3 months

Penalties for Violations

In La Plata County, burning without a required burn permit or violating fire restrictions can lead to escalating penalties:

  • State Law (CRS 25-7-123): A civil penalty of up to $500 per day for burning without a permit.
  • Fire Restriction Orders: Violating official county-issued fire restrictions (often under the Sheriff's authority) can be a Class 2 Petty Offense, potentially leading to fines ($500 first offense, $750 second, $1,000 third+) plus costs for fire suppression or damages.
  • Code Enforcement: Non-compliance can escalate to legal action, including recording notices, lawsuits, and fines up to $100/day through the County Attorney's Office.

Contact the local dispatch 970-385-2900 prior to lighting the burn each day of the permit.

Any person who knowingly or willingly fails to obtain a required permit and/or violates the permit system shall be subject to the provisions of Section 105 of the "International Fire Code" as adopted by La Plata County.
